Restrictions on U.S. Military Newspaper Signal First Amendment Danger for All Media

Pete Hegseth has banned photographers from Pentagon briefings after “unflattering” photos were published earlier this month

This week the Pentagon disinvited the military’s Star & Stripes publication from attending Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s press conference. That may seem like a minor matter as President Donald Trump and Hegseth have issued broad warnings to the U.S. media about what they characterize as “unpatriotic” coverage of the war in Iran. But it signals a turning point for the newspaper, which has been continuously reporting on military matters since World War II.

The move comes after the Pentagon issued a memo to Stars and Stripes in January outlining new restrictions on content in the newspaper, including a requirement to abide by “good order and discipline.” The newspaper is also expected to “modernize its operations” and “refocus its content away from woke distractions that siphon morale.”

“The Pentagon blackballed its own newspaper from covering its own press conference?” wrote Kevin Baron, a Stars & Stripes reporter. “Reminder, Stars & Stripes employees are US Army civilians. Their editorial independence is protected by Congress specifically to prevent political leaders from feeding troops propaganda.”

The censorship of Stars & Stripes follows the Pentagon’s October 2025 issuance of a new policy for all media. Credentialed outlets must agree to a policy that states reporters cannot gather or publish information from the Pentagon that is not specifically authorized, including declassified information and off-the-record conversations.

Most media outlets refused to sign the agreement, leading to ABC News, CBS News, CNN, NBC News, Fox News, the Associated Press, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and countless other outlets losing their Pentagon press credentials.

As media outlets continue to cover the escalating war in the Middle East, Hegseth has bemoaned much of the coverage as “fake news,” taking particular aim at CNN last week. “Fake news from CNN reports that the Trump administration underestimated the Iran war’s impact on the Strait of Hormuz,” he said during a press conference. “Patently ridiculous, of course. For decades, Iran has threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This is always what they do, hold the strait hostage. CNN doesn’t think we thought of that. It’s a fundamentally unserious report. The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better.”

Hegseth is referring to the billionaire chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance’s buyout of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, in a $111 billion deal. The deal has been the subject of lawsuits and controversy alleging Ellison’s father Larry Ellison, Oracle founder and one of the richest people in the world, and Trump had finessed the deal away from Netflix.

Even Fox News thinks the media is under fire, referencing Hegseth’s characterization of journalists as “unpatriotic” and “anti-Trump” as they ask questions about the war in Iran. Trump, meanwhile, praised FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s warning about media outlets “correcting course” on their war coverage.

“Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions – also known as the fake news – have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up,” wrote Carr in a post on X. “The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not.”

Meanwhile the families of U.S. military members killed in Iran have spoken out against claims from Hegseth that bereaved families urged him to “finish” the job in the Middle East. Hegseth told reporters yesterday that he had spoken with the families of all six service members killed in a refueling tanker crash last week.

“What I heard through tears, through hugs, through strength and through unbreakable resolve, was the same from family after family,” said Hegseth. “They said, ‘Finish this. Honor their sacrifice. Do not waver. Do not stop until the job is done.”

Charles Simmons, father of Ohio Tech Sgt. Tyler Simmons, 28, who was killed in the crash, denied discussing that with Hegseth. “I can’t speak for the other families,” Simmons told NBC News. “When he spoke to me, that was not something we talked about. I didn’t say anything along those lines.”

Stephan Douglas, cousin of Tyler Simmons, one of the three Ohioans killed in the crash, said the conflict was unnecessary in a weekend interview with Columbus news station WCMH. “This could have been prevented,” said Douglas. “We didn’t need to be in this war. This is uncalled for, and this is what we get.”

“Families are suffering right now,” said Bernice Smith, Simmons’ grandmother. “Just to create a war because you want to create a war is not right.”

  1. Thank you for keeping the writing honest and the points easy to verify against your own experience, and a stop at believeinyourideas reflected the same approach, no exaggeration just steady useful content that I can take with me into my own work without second guessing every sentence I happen to read here.

  2. Well crafted post, the structure flows naturally from one point to the next without forcing transitions, and a stop at findsomethingamazing kept the same flow going, you can tell when a writer has thought about how their content reads rather than just what it contains and this is one of those examples.

  3. The depth of coverage felt about right for the format, neither shallow nor overwhelming, and a look at uniquegiftideas kept that calibration going, getting the depth right for blog format is genuinely difficult because too shallow loses experts and too deep loses beginners but this site nailed it nicely which I really do appreciate.

  4. While reviewing different online shopping pages this afternoon, I visited organized petal urban listing, and I enjoyed browsing here, with everything appearing well maintained and content reading naturally throughout the browsing flow.

  5. Reading this on a phone at a coffee shop and finding it perfectly suited to that context, and a stop at learnexploreachieve continued the comfortable mobile experience, content that works across reading conditions without compromising on substance is increasingly important and this site has clearly thought about the whole reader experience here.

  6. Following a few of the internal links revealed more posts of similar quality, and a stop at everydayshoppinghub added more to that growing pile, sites where internal links lead to more good content rather than to more of the same recycled material are sites with depth and this one has clearly built that depth carefully.

  7. Well structured and easy to read, that combination is rarer than people think, and a stop at discoverandbuy confirmed the same standard runs across the rest of the site, definitely the kind of place I will be coming back to when this topic comes up in conversation later again over the weeks ahead.

  8. High quality writing, no marketing speak and no buzzwords that mean nothing, and a stop at uniquevaluecorner kept that going, simple direct content that actually communicates something is harder to find than it should be and this is one of the rare places that gets it right consistently across many different posts.

  9. While exploring recommendation websites and online shopping collections with attractive presentation styles, I eventually checked best value directory – The browsing process was simple and intuitive, the categories were displayed in a neat format, and the visual presentation helped make the entire experience feel more polished and user friendly overall.

  10. Skipped past the first paragraph thinking it was setup and had to come back when the rest referenced it, and a stop at findyournextgoal similarly rewarded careful reading from the start, content where every paragraph carries weight is content I now know to read from the beginning rather than skipping ahead.

Felt like I was reading something written by someone who actually thinks about the topic rather than reciting it, and a look at discovergreatvalue reinforced that impression, the difference between recited content and considered content is huge and this site clearly belongs to the latter category which I appreciate as a careful reader looking for substance.

  13. Really appreciate that the writer did not stretch the post to hit some target word count, the points end when they are made, and a stop at simplebuyhub reflected the same discipline, brevity is generosity in disguise and this site has clearly figured that out far better than most blog operations have.

  14. Skipped a meeting reminder to finish the post, and a stop at shapeyourdreams held me past another reminder, when content beats meetings the writer is doing something extraordinary because meetings have institutional support behind them and yet good writing can still occasionally win that competition for attention which I find heartening today.

  15. My usual pattern is to skim and bounce but this site has reset that pattern temporarily, and a stop at findyourinspirationtoday maintained the slower reading mode, content that changes how I read is content with structural influence and this site has clearly nudged my reading behaviour toward something better at least for the duration of these visits.

  16. A piece that did exactly what it promised in the headline without overshooting or underdelivering, and a look at globalfashionfinds continued that calibration, alignment between promise and delivery is a basic editorial virtue that many sites fail at and this site has clearly mastered the matching of expectation and substance throughout pieces.

  17. 22. Now adding a small note in my reading log that this site is one to watch, and a look at yourstylematters reinforced the watch status, the few sites I track deliberately rather than encounter accidentally are sites I expect ongoing returns from and this one has cleared the bar for that elevated tracking based on what I read.

  23. While browsing online shopping platforms and deal discovery websites, I found smart deals guide – The website featured interesting content with smooth navigation, making the experience enjoyable, easy, and worth returning to regularly for more shopping inspiration.

  24. Picked up two new ideas that I expect will come up in conversations this week, and a look at newtrendmarket added another, content that arms me with talking points rather than just filling time is the kind that provides ongoing value beyond the moment of reading and this site is generating that kind of ongoing value.

  25. Reading this triggered a small change in how I think about the topic going forward, and a stop at makesomethingnew reinforced that subtle shift, the rare content that actually moves my thinking rather than just confirming or filling it is the kind I most value and this site is providing that kind of impact today.

  26. 30. While checking various online shopping platforms earlier today, I came across helpful pine urban bazaar and noticed a nice browsing experience overall, where categories remained organized and functionality worked perfectly throughout the visit.

  31. Took a few notes from this post, the points are easy to remember without needing to come back and check, and a look at brightnewbeginnings added a couple more, the kind of place that sticks in the memory long after the browser tab has been closed for the day which says a lot really.

  32. However casually I came to this site I have ended up reading carefully, and a look at makepositivechanges continued earning that careful reading, the conversion from casual visitor to careful reader is something content earns rather than demands and this site has accomplished that conversion for me over the course of just a few pieces.

  33. Did not expect much when I clicked through but ended up reading the whole thing carefully, and a stop at believeandcreate kept that engagement going, sometimes the unassuming sites turn out to deliver more than the flashy ones which is something I have learned to look out for over time online lately and across topics.

  34. While analyzing service-based websites, I noticed a platform that feels modern and clear, and WiseParcel service network hub provides a smooth browsing experience overall – The design is minimal, navigation is simple, and users can explore services without confusion or visual distractions.

  35. Considered as a whole this site has developed a coherent point of view that comes through in individual pieces, and a look at yourvisionawaits continued displaying that coherence, sites with a unified perspective rather than a grab bag of takes are sites with editorial maturity and this one has clearly developed that maturity through years of work.
