Restrictions on U.S. Military Newspaper Signal First Amendment Danger for All Media

Pete Hegseth has banned photographers from Pentagon briefings after “unflattering” photos were published earlier this month

This week the Pentagon disinvited the military’s Star & Stripes publication from attending Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s press conference. That may seem like a minor matter as President Donald Trump and Hegseth have issued broad warnings to the U.S. media about what they characterize as “unpatriotic” coverage of the war in Iran. But it signals a turning point for the newspaper, which has been continuously reporting on military matters since World War II.

The move comes after the Pentagon issued a memo to Stars and Stripes in January outlining new restrictions on content in the newspaper, including a requirement to abide by “good order and discipline.” The newspaper is also expected to “modernize its operations” and “refocus its content away from woke distractions that siphon morale.”

“The Pentagon blackballed its own newspaper from covering its own press conference?” wrote Kevin Baron, a Stars & Stripes reporter. “Reminder, Stars & Stripes employees are US Army civilians. Their editorial independence is protected by Congress specifically to prevent political leaders from feeding troops propaganda.”

The censorship of Stars & Stripes follows the Pentagon’s October 2025 issuance of a new policy for all media. Credentialed outlets must agree to a policy that states reporters cannot gather or publish information from the Pentagon that is not specifically authorized, including declassified information and off-the-record conversations.

Most media outlets refused to sign the agreement, leading to ABC News, CBS News, CNN, NBC News, Fox News, the Associated Press, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and countless other outlets losing their Pentagon press credentials.

As media outlets continue to cover the escalating war in the Middle East, Hegseth has bemoaned much of the coverage as “fake news,” taking particular aim at CNN last week. “Fake news from CNN reports that the Trump administration underestimated the Iran war’s impact on the Strait of Hormuz,” he said during a press conference. “Patently ridiculous, of course. For decades, Iran has threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This is always what they do, hold the strait hostage. CNN doesn’t think we thought of that. It’s a fundamentally unserious report. The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better.”

Hegseth is referring to the billionaire chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance’s buyout of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, in a $111 billion deal. The deal has been the subject of lawsuits and controversy alleging Ellison’s father Larry Ellison, Oracle founder and one of the richest people in the world, and Trump had finessed the deal away from Netflix.

Even Fox News thinks the media is under fire, referencing Hegseth’s characterization of journalists as “unpatriotic” and “anti-Trump” as they ask questions about the war in Iran. Trump, meanwhile, praised FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s warning about media outlets “correcting course” on their war coverage.

“Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions – also known as the fake news – have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up,” wrote Carr in a post on X. “The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not.”

Meanwhile the families of U.S. military members killed in Iran have spoken out against claims from Hegseth that bereaved families urged him to “finish” the job in the Middle East. Hegseth told reporters yesterday that he had spoken with the families of all six service members killed in a refueling tanker crash last week.

“What I heard through tears, through hugs, through strength and through unbreakable resolve, was the same from family after family,” said Hegseth. “They said, ‘Finish this. Honor their sacrifice. Do not waver. Do not stop until the job is done.”

Charles Simmons, father of Ohio Tech Sgt. Tyler Simmons, 28, who was killed in the crash, denied discussing that with Hegseth. “I can’t speak for the other families,” Simmons told NBC News. “When he spoke to me, that was not something we talked about. I didn’t say anything along those lines.”

Stephan Douglas, cousin of Tyler Simmons, one of the three Ohioans killed in the crash, said the conflict was unnecessary in a weekend interview with Columbus news station WCMH. “This could have been prevented,” said Douglas. “We didn’t need to be in this war. This is uncalled for, and this is what we get.”

“Families are suffering right now,” said Bernice Smith, Simmons’ grandmother. “Just to create a war because you want to create a war is not right.”

  2. Liked the natural conversational tone throughout, never stiff and never overly casual either, and a stop at findmotivationtoday kept that comfortable middle ground going, finding a tone that respects the reader without becoming distant or overly familiar is harder than it sounds and this site nails that balance consistently across many different pieces.

  3. While browsing different ecommerce catalogs, I found a platform that feels highly responsive and well optimized, and Cloud Forge goods network provides quick loading performance overall – Navigation is seamless and pages respond instantly, ensuring users can browse comfortably without delays or interruptions affecting the experience.

  4. A piece that prompted a small mental rearrangement of how I order related ideas, and a look at urbanstylemarket extended that rearranging effect, content that affects the structure of my thinking rather than just adding to it is content with the deepest kind of impact and this site is reaching that depth for me today.

  5. Liked how the post handled an objection I was forming as I read, and a stop at inspiredthinkinghub similarly anticipated where my thinking was going next, the rare writer who can predict reader concerns and address them in advance is doing something most online content fails to do despite that being basic editorial work.

  6. After browsing through various online stores and digital pages today, I eventually found structured internet destination, and I appreciated how polished everything looked while pages loaded properly and browsing remained enjoyable throughout the experience.

  8. Polished and informative without feeling overproduced, that is the sweet spot, and a look at packnest hit it again, you can tell when a site has been built with care versus thrown together for the sake of having something to put online and this is clearly the former approach taken by the team.

  9. During my review of productivity focused websites and learning resources, I came across a website that feels calm and thoughtfully arranged for visitors, and Focus Journey portal provides a smooth browsing experience overall – The design is minimal, content feels encouraging, and readers can explore mental clarity strategies without overwhelming visuals.

  10. Thanks for the honest framing without exaggerated claims that the topic will change my life, and a stop at discoverinfiniteideas kept the same modest tone, restraint in marketing language signals trustworthiness and the writers here are clearly playing the long game by building credibility rather than chasing immediate clicks through hyperbole.

  11. If the topic interests you at all this is a place to spend time, and a look at bestdailyoffers reinforced that recommendation, the broader question of where to invest topical reading time is one this site answers convincingly through the consistent quality across multiple pieces I have sampled during the current reading session today.

  12. Halfway through reading I knew this would be one to bookmark, and a look at rankorbit confirmed that early intuition, when bookmark intent forms before finishing a post you know the writing has cleared a quality bar that most content fails to clear and this site has cleared it on multiple visits already.

  13. Decided to write a short note to the author if there is contact info anywhere, and a stop at findyourpath extended that intention, the urge to thank the writer directly is a strong signal of content quality and this site has triggered that urge in me today which is a fairly rare event for my reading.

  14. The structure of the post made it easy to follow without losing track of where I was, and a look at linkbloom kept the same logical flow going, this site clearly understands that organisation is half the battle in keeping readers engaged from the first line to the last across any kind of post.

  15. Honestly this hits the sweet spot between detail and brevity, no rambling and no shortcuts, and a quick visit to creativechoiceoutlet kept that going across the related pages, the kind of place that respects your attention without trying to grab it through cheap tactics or attention seeking design choices that get tired fast.

  16. In the middle of an otherwise scattered day this post landed as a moment of focus, and a stop at trendandstyle extended that focused feeling across more pages, content that anchors a fragmented day rather than contributing to the fragmentation is content with real centring effect and this site is providing that anchoring function for me.

  17. Closed the tab with a small sense of finality rather than the usual rushed exit, and a stop at everydaychoicehub produced the same considered closing, when reading ends with deliberate satisfaction rather than impatient skip you know the time was well spent and this site is producing those satisfying endings consistently across what I read.

  18. Found something quietly useful here that I expect to return to, and a stop at findyourbalance added more of the same, content with quiet utility ages well in a way that flashy hot takes do not and I have learned to weight quiet utility much higher when deciding what to bookmark for later use.

  19. Skipped the social share buttons but might come back to actually use one later, and a stop at brightfashionfinds extended that share urge, content that triggers genuine sharing impulses rather than performative ones is content that has actually moved me and not many posts in a typical week do that for me actually.

  20. Glad I gave this a chance instead of bouncing on the headline, and after brightvalueworld I was certain I had made the right call, snap judgements based on titles miss a lot of good content and this is a reminder to slow down and check things out before scrolling past in a hurry.

  21. Reading more of the archives is now on my plan for the weekend, and a stop at modernhomecorner confirmed the archive worth the time, the rare archive worth a dedicated reading session rather than just casual sampling is the rare archive of serious work and this site has clearly produced enough of that work to warrant the deeper exploration.

  22. Really clear writing, the kind that makes you want to share the link with someone who has been asking about the topic, and a quick browse through packpeak only made me more sure of that, the information here stays useful long after the first read is done which says a lot.

  23. Now thinking about whether the writer might publish a longer form work I would buy, and a look at mystylezone suggested the same depth would translate, content that makes me want to pay for related work in other formats is content that has earned commercial trust as well as attention trust and this site has both clearly.

  24. Now sitting back and recognising that this was a small but real win in my reading day, and a stop at simplefashioncorner extended that quiet win, the cumulative effect of small reading wins versus the cumulative effect of small reading losses is real over time and this site is contributing to the wins side of that ledger.

  25. I spent part of today reviewing different online stores and eventually landed on recommended field market hub, and I found a great platform overall, where pages opened quickly and categories were arranged professionally for easy browsing.

  26. Probably the kind of site that should be more widely read than it appears to be, and a look at thebestdeal reinforced that quiet wish, the gap between a sites quality and its apparent reach is sometimes large and that gap exists for this site in a way that makes me want to mention it more.

  27. Quietly building a case in my head for why this site deserves more attention than it currently seems to receive, and a look at explorelimitlesspossibilities reinforced the case, the gap between quality and recognition is a recurring frustration in independent online content and this site is one of the cases that seems particularly egregious to me today.

  28. I learned more from this short post than from longer articles I read earlier today, and a stop at discoveramazingfinds added even more useful detail without going off topic, this site clearly knows how to keep things focused without sacrificing depth which is a hard balance to strike for any writer.

  29. Appreciate how nothing here feels copied or pieced together from other places, the voice is consistent and the tone stays human, and after I checked rankripple I noticed the same style holds, which is a small detail but it makes the whole experience feel personal rather than like another generic site.

  30. Liked how the writer used real examples instead of theoretical ones to make the points stick, and a stop at dailyshoppingzone added even more concrete examples, this is the kind of practical approach that respects readers who actually want to apply what they learn rather than just nodding along passively without doing anything useful.

  31. Thanks for sharing this with the open internet rather than locking it behind a paywall like so many sites do now, and a stop at linkboostly kept the same vibe going, generous helpful and clearly written by someone who actually wants people to learn from it rather than just charge them.

  32. Felt the post handled a sensitive angle of the topic with appropriate care, and a look at globalfashionzone extended that careful handling across related material, sites that can navigate delicate territory without causing damage are rare and require a level of judgement that comes from experience rather than from following any clear playbook.

  33. Felt the writer was speaking my language without trying to imitate it, and a look at findyourfavorites continued that natural fit, when a writers default voice happens to match what you find easy to read the experience feels frictionless and that is something I notice and remember about specific sites going forward.

  34. Now leaving a small mental note to recommend this when the topic comes up in conversation, and a look at findperfectgift extended that recommend ready feeling, content that arms me with shareable references for likely future conversations is content with social value and this site is providing that conversational ammunition consistently for me lately.

  35. The lack of unnecessary jargon made the post accessible without sacrificing accuracy, and a look at zentcart continued in the same accessible style, technical topics often hide behind specialised vocabulary but here the writer trusts the reader to keep up with plain language and that trust pays off nicely throughout the entire post.

  37. During my review of different online shopping sites, I found a platform with a calm and easy-to-follow interface, and Meadow Cloud store collective offers a well-arranged browsing structure overall – Content is clearly organized, and users can move through sections comfortably while reading product information without distraction or layout issues interrupting the experience.

  38. Reading this confirmed a small detail I had been uncertain about, and a stop at growbeyondlimits provided the source for further checking, content that supports verification through citations or links rather than just asserting facts is more trustworthy and this site has clearly built its credibility through that kind of verifiable approach consistently.

  39. Recommended without hesitation if you care about careful coverage of this topic, and a stop at startsomethingawesome reinforced the recommendation, the bar I set for unhesitating recommendations is fairly high and this site has cleared it through the cumulative weight of multiple consistently good pieces rather than through any single standout post which is meaningful.

  40. Strong recommendation, anyone interested in this topic owes themselves a visit, and a stop at freshfashionmarket extends that recommendation across more of the site, this is the kind of resource that makes me more optimistic about the state of the open web than I usually am these days actually for once which is genuinely refreshing.
