Restrictions on U.S. Military Newspaper Signal First Amendment Danger for All Media

Pete Hegseth has banned photographers from Pentagon briefings after “unflattering” photos were published earlier this month

This week the Pentagon disinvited the military’s Star & Stripes publication from attending Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s press conference. That may seem like a minor matter as President Donald Trump and Hegseth have issued broad warnings to the U.S. media about what they characterize as “unpatriotic” coverage of the war in Iran. But it signals a turning point for the newspaper, which has been continuously reporting on military matters since World War II.

The move comes after the Pentagon issued a memo to Stars and Stripes in January outlining new restrictions on content in the newspaper, including a requirement to abide by “good order and discipline.” The newspaper is also expected to “modernize its operations” and “refocus its content away from woke distractions that siphon morale.”

“The Pentagon blackballed its own newspaper from covering its own press conference?” wrote Kevin Baron, a Stars & Stripes reporter. “Reminder, Stars & Stripes employees are US Army civilians. Their editorial independence is protected by Congress specifically to prevent political leaders from feeding troops propaganda.”

The censorship of Stars & Stripes follows the Pentagon’s October 2025 issuance of a new policy for all media. Credentialed outlets must agree to a policy that states reporters cannot gather or publish information from the Pentagon that is not specifically authorized, including declassified information and off-the-record conversations.

Most media outlets refused to sign the agreement, leading to ABC News, CBS News, CNN, NBC News, Fox News, the Associated Press, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and countless other outlets losing their Pentagon press credentials.

As media outlets continue to cover the escalating war in the Middle East, Hegseth has bemoaned much of the coverage as “fake news,” taking particular aim at CNN last week. “Fake news from CNN reports that the Trump administration underestimated the Iran war’s impact on the Strait of Hormuz,” he said during a press conference. “Patently ridiculous, of course. For decades, Iran has threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This is always what they do, hold the strait hostage. CNN doesn’t think we thought of that. It’s a fundamentally unserious report. The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better.”

Hegseth is referring to the billionaire chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance’s buyout of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, in a $111 billion deal. The deal has been the subject of lawsuits and controversy alleging Ellison’s father Larry Ellison, Oracle founder and one of the richest people in the world, and Trump had finessed the deal away from Netflix.

Even Fox News thinks the media is under fire, referencing Hegseth’s characterization of journalists as “unpatriotic” and “anti-Trump” as they ask questions about the war in Iran. Trump, meanwhile, praised FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s warning about media outlets “correcting course” on their war coverage.

“Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions – also known as the fake news – have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up,” wrote Carr in a post on X. “The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not.”

Meanwhile the families of U.S. military members killed in Iran have spoken out against claims from Hegseth that bereaved families urged him to “finish” the job in the Middle East. Hegseth told reporters yesterday that he had spoken with the families of all six service members killed in a refueling tanker crash last week.

“What I heard through tears, through hugs, through strength and through unbreakable resolve, was the same from family after family,” said Hegseth. “They said, ‘Finish this. Honor their sacrifice. Do not waver. Do not stop until the job is done.”

Charles Simmons, father of Ohio Tech Sgt. Tyler Simmons, 28, who was killed in the crash, denied discussing that with Hegseth. “I can’t speak for the other families,” Simmons told NBC News. “When he spoke to me, that was not something we talked about. I didn’t say anything along those lines.”

Stephan Douglas, cousin of Tyler Simmons, one of the three Ohioans killed in the crash, said the conflict was unnecessary in a weekend interview with Columbus news station WCMH. “This could have been prevented,” said Douglas. “We didn’t need to be in this war. This is uncalled for, and this is what we get.”

“Families are suffering right now,” said Bernice Smith, Simmons’ grandmother. “Just to create a war because you want to create a war is not right.”

  2. Quietly enthusiastic about this site after the past few hours of reading, and a stop at urbanfashionshop extended that enthusiasm, the calibration of enthusiasm to evidence is something I try to maintain and this site has earned a calibrated quiet enthusiasm rather than the loud excitement that usually fades within a day or two of finding something.

  3. Found the writing surprisingly fresh for what is by now a well covered topic, and a stop at inspiregrowthdaily kept that freshness going across the related pages, original perspective on familiar ground is hard to come by and this site has clearly earned its place in the conversation rather than just rehashing old ideas.

  4. Now placing this in the small category of sites whose updates I would actually want to know about, and a stop at startdreamingbig confirmed that placement, the difference between sites I want to follow and sites I just consume from is real and this one has crossed into the active follow category from the casual consumption side.

  5. Liked the way the post balanced confidence and humility, and a stop at thinkcreateinnovate maintained the same balance, knowing when to assert and when to acknowledge uncertainty is a sign of mature thinking and the writers here have clearly developed that calibration through what I assume is years of careful work on their craft.

  6. Honestly this kind of writing is why I still bother to read independent sites, and a look at zapscan extended that broader reflection, the few sites that justify continued attention to non algorithmic content are sites like this one and finding them periodically is enough to keep my reading habits oriented toward independent rather than aggregated content.

  7. If quality blog writing is dying as people sometimes claim then this site is one piece of evidence that it has not died yet, and a look at createimpactnow extended that evidence, the broader cultural question about online writing has empirical answers in specific sites and this one is contributing to a more optimistic answer overall.

  8. After reading several posts back to back the consistent voice across them is impressive, and a stop at mysticshorecollective continued that voice consistency, sites that maintain a single coherent voice across many pieces by potentially many writers represent serious editorial discipline and this one has clearly developed the institutional consistency needed for that.

  9. Most of the time I feel the open web is in decline and then I find a site like this, and a stop at growthcart reinforced that mood lift, the cumulative effect of finding occasional excellent independent content versus the cumulative effect of finding mostly mediocre content is real for the long term reader maintaining web habits today.

  10. Quietly the writers approach to the topic differs from the dominant takes I have been encountering, and a stop at fashiondailyhub extended that distinctive approach, content that maintains a different perspective without explicitly arguing against the dominant ones is content with confident editorial identity and this site has that confidence throughout pieces.

  11. Came back to this an hour later to reread a specific section, and a quick visit to freshseasonfinds also drew a second look, content that pulls you back rather than letting you move on permanently is the kind I want to fill my browser bookmarks with in 2026 and beyond as the open internet evolves.

  12. Reading this prompted me to dig into a related topic later, and a stop at jetspark provided some of the starting points for that follow up reading, content that triggers further exploration rather than satisfying curiosity completely is content with real generative energy and this site has plenty of that energy throughout it.

  13. After reading several posts back to back the consistent voice across them is impressive, and a stop at mystylezone continued that voice consistency, sites that maintain a single coherent voice across many pieces by potentially many writers represent serious editorial discipline and this one has clearly developed the institutional consistency needed for that.

  14. Decided I would read the archives over the weekend, and a stop at trendandgiftstore confirmed that the archives would be worth the time, very few sites have archives I would actively read through but this one has earned that level of interest based on the consistent quality across what I have sampled so far.

  15. The examples really helped me grasp the points faster than abstract descriptions would have, and a stop at axisflag added a few more practical illustrations that drove the message home, the kind of writing that knows its readers learn better through concrete situations rather than vague generalities is rare and worth recognising clearly.

  16. This stands out compared to similar posts I have read recently, less noise and more substance, and a look at brightgiftcorner kept that gap going, you can really feel the difference between content made by someone who cares versus content made to fill a publishing schedule for an algorithm trying to keep growing somehow.

  17. Picked this site to mention to a colleague who would benefit, and a look at discoverfashionfinds added more material I will pass along, recommending sites to colleagues is a higher bar than recommending to friends because the professional context demands more careful curation and this site cleared the professional bar without me having to think.

  18. UFC Macau brings an exciting fight card in which the wagering lines reveal significant gaps when comparing public perception versus factual fight metrics.

  19. A piece that read as if the writer was thinking carefully rather than just typing fluently, and a look at simplechoiceoutlet continued that considered quality, the difference between fluent typing and careful thinking shows up in writing and this site reads as the product of thought rather than just the product of language fluency apparently.

  20. Started smiling at one paragraph because the writing was just nice, and a look at fashiondailycorner produced a couple more such moments, prose that produces small spontaneous reactions in the reader is doing more than just transferring information and the writers here are clearly hitting that level fairly consistently throughout pieces.

  21. Worth flagging this post as worth a careful read rather than a casual skim, and a stop at yourstylemarket earned the same careful approach, the few sites that warrant slower reading are sites I now treat differently from the daily content stream and this one has clearly moved into that elevated treatment category.

  22. Just enjoyed the experience without needing to think about why, and a look at growwithdetermination kept that effortless feeling going, sometimes the best content is invisible in the sense that you forget you are reading until you reach the end and realise time has passed without you noticing it pass naturally.

  23. Worth your time, that is the simplest endorsement I can give, and a stop at urbanedgecollective extends that endorsement across the rest of the site, this is one of those increasingly rare places that delivers on what it promises rather than over selling the content and under delivering on substance every time which I find frustrating elsewhere.

  24. The neon illumination from the Galaxy Arena reflects off a fight card crafted not merely for viewer enjoyment, but rather for a structured and merciless sifting.

  25. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a sensible take on this topic without the usual marketing nonsense, and a look at happyvaluehub kept that grounded approach going, sites that stay focused on serving readers rather than monetising every click are rare and this is clearly one of those rare ones I really appreciate finding.

  26. A relief to read something where I did not have to fact check every claim mentally, and a look at goldenrootmart continued that reliable feeling, sites where I can lower my guard and trust the content are rare and this one is earning that trust paragraph by paragraph through consistent careful work behind the scenes.

  27. Refreshing to find writing that does not try to manipulate the reader into clicking onto the next page through cliffhangers and forced engagement, and a stop at springlightgoods continued in the same respectful way, this is what reader first design actually looks like in practice rather than just in marketing copy that sounds nice.

  28. Now setting this aside as a model of how to write thoughtfully on the topic, and a stop at wiseparcel extended that model status, content that becomes a reference for how a kind of writing should be done is content with influence beyond its own readership and this site is reaching that level for me clearly today.

  29. Worth flagging that the post handled an angle of the topic I had not seen elsewhere, and a look at zingdart extended that fresh treatment, content that finds underexplored corners of well covered subjects is genuinely valuable and this site has demonstrated that exploratory editorial approach across multiple pieces in my reading sessions today.

  30. Will be coming back to this for sure, too much good content to absorb in one sitting, and a stop at freshfindshub only added more pages I want to dig through, this site is going onto my regular rotation list because it consistently delivers something worth the visit lately rather than empty filler.

  31. Most blog writing on this subject reaches for the same handful of arguments and this post avoided them, and a look at fashionanddesign continued the original treatment, content that finds its own path through territory other writers have flattened is content with real authorial energy and this site has plenty of that distinctive energy.

  32. Now planning to recommend this site in a context where my recommendations are taken seriously, and a stop at thetrendstore confirmed I should make that recommendation soon, the small but real act of recommending content into spaces where my taste matters is something I take seriously and this site is worth the recommendation.

  33. Worth flagging that the post handled an angle of the topic I had not seen elsewhere, and a look at connectandcreate extended that fresh treatment, content that finds underexplored corners of well covered subjects is genuinely valuable and this site has demonstrated that exploratory editorial approach across multiple pieces in my reading sessions today.

  34. This filled in a gap in my understanding that I had not even noticed was there, and a stop at joltfork did the same, the kind of post that gives you more than you expected when you first clicked through from somewhere else, a real find for anyone curious about the area covered here.

  35. Came in expecting another generic take and got something with actual character instead, and a look at redmoonemporium carried that personality forward, finding a distinct voice on a saturated topic is impressive and worth pointing out when it happens because most sites end up sounding identical to their nearest competitors quickly.

  36. Bookmarking this for later, the kind of resource I want to keep nearby, and a quick look at brightfashionoutlet confirmed the rest of the site is worth the same treatment, definitely going into my reference folder for the next time the topic comes up at work or in conversation with someone who asks.

  37. https://justpaste.it/ufc-macau
If you’re looking to automatically bet on all the chalk picks on the UFC Macau card only because they’re listed as the favorite or the audience is behind them, save yourself the trouble and keep your wallet in your pocket.

  38. Closed the tab with a small sense of finality rather than the usual rushed exit, and a stop at sunsetstemgoods produced the same considered closing, when reading ends with deliberate satisfaction rather than impatient skip you know the time was well spent and this site is producing those satisfying endings consistently across what I read.

  39. Will share this on a forum I am part of where it will be appreciated by others working in the same area, and a look at goldenrootcollection suggests there is more here worth passing along too, definitely a generous resource that deserves a wider audience than it probably has today across the open internet.

  40. Now feeling the post has earned a proper recommendation rather than a casual mention, and a stop at bestvaluecorner reinforced the recommendation strength, the difference between mentioning and recommending is a small editorial distinction I observe in my own conversations and this site has earned the upgraded recommendation level from me confidently today.

  41. Just wanted to drop a quick note saying this was a useful read on a topic I have been circling, no fluff, and a stop at yourpotentialgrows added a few extra points that fit the same simple style which makes the whole site feel coherent rather than thrown together by many different writers with different goals.

  42. After reading several posts back to back the consistent voice across them is impressive, and a stop at uniquefashioncorner continued that voice consistency, sites that maintain a single coherent voice across many pieces by potentially many writers represent serious editorial discipline and this one has clearly developed the institutional consistency needed for that.

  43. Thanks for keeping things clear and to the point, that is honestly hard to find online these days, and after reading through growwithdetermination the message stayed consistent which makes me trust the information being shared more than I usually do on similar pages that cover this same kind of topic.

  44. Bookmark moved to my permanent reference folder rather than the casual maybe later folder, and a look at shopwithdelight earned the same upgrade, the distinction between casual interest and lasting reference is something I track carefully and very few sites cross that threshold but this one did so without much effort apparently.

  45. Reading this slowly because the writing rewards a slower pace, and a stop at axonspark did the same, the pace at which I read content is something I now use as a quality signal and writing that earns a slower pace earns my attention as a reader looking for substance these days.

  46. Came back to this twice now in the same week which is unusual for me, and a look at mysticthreadstore suggested I will keep coming back, the kind of post that earns repeated visits rather than one and done reading is the gold standard for content quality and this site clearly hit that standard.
